Design Collective was the recipient of a 2012 Honor Award as part of the 19th Annual Professional Awards Program by the Maryland and Potomac Chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The Award was in recognition for the plaza renovation and landscape design at 100 Light Street in Downtown Baltimore. The Design Collective team took an innovative approach to reposition this classic 1960’s modernist office tower, which rises 35 stories over what was formerly a monolithic 1.3 acre granite plinth. Materials for the plaza renovation — including granite window sills, pavers and glass panes from the existing curtainwall — were mined directly from the building and reused in innovative ways to transform the barren plaza and lobby of Baltimore’s tallest building into a vibrant urban garden and amenity space for pedestrians, employees and residents. Design Collective Landscape Architect, Brian Reetz, states: “This project presented a tremendous opportunity to showcase adaptive use strategies for reclaiming and recycling building materials. Through our work, we not only provided a sustainable design solution for our client, but were able to give back to the City through the addition of quality open space.” The jury, hosted by the Utah Chapter of ASLA, was impressed by the overall quality of the submission and presented the award on April 27, 2012 at the District Architecture Center in Washington, DC.
