Cascade Village North in Akron, Ohio received an award in Multifamily Development and a BEST Smart Growth Award from the Smart Growth Education Foundation and Home Builders Association of Northeast Ohio.

Design Collective prepared the master plan for this urban site, formerly known as Elizabeth Park, following the principles of Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) and New Urbanism. This plan, which was adopted by the community, suggests a continuation of the existing North Hill neighborhood’s urban fabric of small residential lots and a mix of commercial and retail uses along the major transportation corridor, as well as a variety of open space that will be utilized for new retail, mixed-use and civic projects, including a new school.

The Smart Growth Community Excellence Awards recognized builders, developers and community organizations that follow smart growth principles in building housing in both urban and suburban locations. The winners are chosen from entries representing an 11-county area of Northeast Ohio on the basis of the development’s land conservation, environmental sensitivity, use of infrastructure, housing choices, community character, transportation accessibility, economic viability and overall design. The awards were received October 10 at the Smart Growth Community Excellence Award luncheon in Cleveland.
