Ground has been broken for a new “Civic Plaza" in Prince George’s County, Maryland, which will be the first construction in the long-planned Blue Line Corridor Project.

The project has been years in the making. It aims to create a new downtown in the Largo and Capitol Heights area of Prince George's County around the final stops on Metro's Blue Line.

The new plaza will be built right next to the Prince George's County Administration Building at 1301 McCormick Drive in Largo. It’s the first of many planned improvements funded in large part with money made available by the state through the Maryland Stadium Authority. The small park is intended to be a community gathering space.

Acting Prince George's County Executive Tara Jackson, along with U.S. Senator and former Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who launched the project, were among those taking part the a ceremonial groundbreaking.

Alsobrooks is calling it just the beginning.

“All of these starts contribute significantly to the economy in our county,” Alsobrooks said. “ And of course it means also a boost for the region. Because we do operate collaboratively so we are really, really excited about what this means. It’s historic in that this is the first time we’ve been able to get the funding from the Maryland Stadium Authority to jump-start a project in this way.”
