Marquette University hired a Baltimore firm to team with Milwaukee-based Workshop Architects to design a $96 million residence hall on Wells Street.
The project could contain two towers standing about eight stories tall with a combined 750 beds for students. The towers will be connected by a dining hall and community space. It would be built south of Wells Street between 17th and 18th streets.
Marquette on Friday announced that it hired Design Collective, based in Baltimore, to work on the project. Design Collective has a vast portfolio of university work on the East Coast. This will be Design Collective's first Milwaukee-area project.
Workshop Architects, which has designed University of Wisconsin buildings on several campuses, partnered with Design Collective for the project.
“We wanted a partnership between a national firm on the leading edge of new trends in student housing and a local firm that understands Marquette and Milwaukee,” said Marquette University architect Lora Strigens.
J.H. Findorff & Son Inc., a Madison-based builder with an office near downtown Milwaukee. is construction manager for the project. Construction of the hall could begin later this year. It is scheduled for completion in time for the 2018-'19 school year.
After the new buildings are complete, Marquette University will demolish McCormick Hall, and will lay plans to redevelop that property. A wellness and fitness center are among the possible future uses of that land.
