Design Collective, Inc. is pleased to announce that the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) has honored two prominent Baltimore projects as Pillars of the Industry. John Hopkins University’s (JHU) Charles Commons was named the Best Student Housing Rental Apartment Community of the Year and The Crescent at Fells Point was named the Best Mid-Rise Rental Apartment Community of the Year during NAHB’s Pillars of the Industry Awards Gala on April 12.

Charles Commons has become an integral part in developing campus, student and community relations. Located just beyond the boundaries of the JHU Homewood Campus, this 300,000 SF building is more than just student housing, but a place for students and the community to interact. This new mixed-use development project includes 615 beds for upperclassmen, a dining and conference facility and a Barnes & Noble University Bookstore. The beginning of a renaissance in the surrounding community, Charles Commons has created the vitality that has been missing and has sparked a series of new residential construction projects that will transform the neighborhood bringing the line between the campus and neighborhood closer together. This project was developed through a partnership between Baltimore-based developer Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse and Alabama-based, student housing developer Capstone Development Corporation.

Design Collective teamed with Houston-based developer, The Hanover Company, to transform an abandoned brownfield site into a vibrant waterfront community in Fells Point. The Crescent at Fells Point is an eight-story mid-rise high-end loft apartment building that also includes 10 four-level waterfront town homes. Located at the harbor’s edge and at the terminus of Fell Street, the project extends Baltimore’s waterfront promenade through the site and provides prominent project visibility, immediate waterfront access, lush landscaping, and rich hardscape amenities for residents and public use. Building amenities include a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes, a 24-person movie theater, a fitness/aerobics center, pool, and access to 52 boat slips. This vibrant community has served as the catalyst for additional private sector redevelopment on adjacent brownfield sites.

Each project was honored for its excellence in design from what is considered the most prestigious national awards in the multifamily housing industry.
