Johns Hopkins University, Henrietta Lacks Building
Johns Hopkins University
The Henrietta Lacks Building will be a new building adjoining an existing historic structure on the JHU East Baltimore Campus. The building will be occupied and used by the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics [BI], the Institute for Translational Research [ICTR] and the Center for Health Equity [CHE] while providing shared spaces for crossdisciplinary research and education. Named in honor of Henrietta Lacks, the building will address and celebrate her legacy, life and lifetime contributions to science and critically address the aftermath and impact the importance of her immortal cells had on her family and bioethics in general.
In addition to providing more space for each user group, this signature building will reinforce themes of openness, serendipitous interaction, connectivity, welcoming and safety. Key programmatic elements include: formal and informal meeting spaces of various scales, offices and workstations, classroom(s) and exhibit areas envisioned to be organized around a Forum, Light-Well and shrouded by a thoughtfully articulated Façade.
The Henrietta Lacks Building emphasizes the creation of partnerships by ‘building’ community, providing flexibility and adaptability and respecting the context while striving to reflect a unique identity for the institutes.
